There are not really absolute cutoffs in terms of when a facelift is appropriate, or when someone is too old. There are a couple of factors we look at to decide whether someone is a good candidate.
We often look at skin quality. Is there a lot of sun damage, and is there thinning of the skin from that sun damage. We also consider genetics. Does the patient have a good family history of healthy skin that is thick, or is it very thin and wispy. The other factor is smoking, because smokers typically do not have great skin. We want them to at least quit smoking for four weeks prior to surgery.
