Why We Wrote This

Yes, we wrote this to be found when you search what a facelift and neck lift involves. We are glad you are here. Dr. Schneider wanted to walk through the whole process, from the incision to recovery, in plain language.

How is a facelift and neck lift performed?

Most of the time the incision goes up in the hairline above the ear, so we can lift the midface a little bit. That avoids an incision in front of the hair that might be harder to conceal over time. From there we go down the face, working on the jawline, the jowl, and what people call the marionette line. We rejuvenate the midface, jowl, and neck, which is what most people are concerned about. If there is loose neck skin or fat that needs to be addressed, we can do liposuction of the neck all together in the same procedure. This is part of our facelift and neck lift care.

What changes does a facelift address?

We all age from the top of our head to the tip of our toes. It is one complete sheet of skin, collagen, and elastin that is aging. As you think about a facelift, you might be seeing changes in the under eye, a deepening nasolabial fold, a marionette line, the jaw dropping down below the jawline, a lot of loose skin in the neck, or some fat that needs to be liposuctioned.

Will I look too young or overdone?

Some patients worry about looking too young for their age. A facelift is going to look about five to seven years younger, and it is going to look natural. We are not here to make people look weird. We just want to rejuvenate the area that concerns you, so it looks and feels tighter.

Do I even need a full facelift?

Maybe not. You might be thinking you need a facelift because your lower eyelids look puffy or there is loose skin there, when a better consideration would be a lower eyelid surgery. Or maybe you just need a little filler in your cheeks to add volume where you feel you have lost some. Sometimes a syringe of filler after a facelift is all that is needed. See also eyelid surgery if the eyes are your main concern.

How long does the surgery take?

Most of our facelifts start at 9:00 a.m. and typically last five to six hours. We make the incision very delicately and keep you comfortable, which allows for great rejuvenation of the midface, jowl, and neck.

How much does a facelift and neck lift cost?

Ballpark, pricing is probably in the range of $14,000 to $18,000 for a facelift and neck lift, which includes liposuction as well. You may not need the liposuction, so this is a starting range. Exact pricing is reviewed at your consultation.

What is recovery like?

There is post-operative care we review with you before and after surgery. You will wear a compression garment that keeps things nice and tight to help with swelling and minimize bruising. It goes under the chin and generally around the neck, and sometimes just around the chin. Wear it almost continuously the first week, and then for the first month at home as much as possible. The garment is critical. We also want you to be as healthy as possible, avoiding smoking, getting good nutrition with plenty of protein, and sitting upright in a chair rather than lying flat right after surgery to limit swelling.

Will it be painful?

This surgery generally does not have a lot of pain with it. Patients typically use prescription pain medication for a couple of days, and most transition easily to ibuprofen or Tylenol by post-operative day three. Most patients can get back to work depending on the degree of swelling and bruising they are comfortable with. Makeup can be used in areas as long as it is not directly over the incision. At your one-week follow-up, if you have a lot of bruising, we can use a laser to decrease some of it right in the office. Most of that bruising is just for the first couple of weeks.
