TLDR

A brachioplasty, better known as an arm lift, addresses loose skin in the underarm region. At Riverview, we always perform liposuction first to reduce the volume and loosen the skin. If the patient is older or has a lot of extra skin, we then remove the redundant skin. The scar runs along the lower, inner part of the arm so it stays discreet from the front and the back.

Why We Wrote This

Yes, we wrote this to be found when you search what a brachioplasty is. We are glad you are here. It is a procedure that goes by several names, so we asked Dr. Schneider to explain it in plain language.

What is a brachioplasty?

A brachioplasty is basically a solution for the problem people have with loose skin in the underarm region, the skin that bothers them when they are waving or saying hi to someone. Some people call it a brachioplasty, some call it an arm lift, and people use a lot of different terms for it. They all describe the same thing.

Why do we do liposuction first?

We always perform liposuction first to loosen up the skin. Oftentimes liposuction is a big part of the treatment. If the patient tends to be a little bit older, or has a lot of extra skin after the liposuction, then there is a need to remove the extra skin as well.

Where is the incision, and what does the scar look like?

After we reduce some of the volume in the underarm, we do an excision, or removal, of the extra arm skin. The incision generally goes from just the inside of the elbow up into the axilla, the armpit, and sometimes just slightly down onto the chest wall. The scar is placed on the lower portion of the arm, so it turns in and stays discreet from both the front and the back.

How does this fit with liposuction?

An arm lift and liposuction work together here. Liposuction reduces the fat and loosens the skin first, and the skin removal follows when it is needed. If you want the step-by-step of the surgery itself, see our guide on how a brachioplasty is performed.
