Depending on our Genetics, our everyday activities and our overall health, our skin succumbs to aging differently. The signs of aging often start with fine lines and wrinkles around the expressive areas of the face and general skin laxity, due to a loss in vital collagen production. Without active collagen and elastin fibers continually regenerating, those wrinkles and fine lines can become more prominent and require some preventative care. If you’re looking at plastic surgery for the first time, in an effort to remedy the signs of aging but aren’t sure about doing a fully invasive facelift, we recommend starting with a mini facelift at Riverview.

What is a Mini Facelift?

A mini facelift, also known as a short scar or S-lift, is a less invasive surgical procedure than a standard facelift. The procedure is primarily designed to address signs of aging in the lower face and the jawline. This procedure uses smaller incisions and involves a shorter surgery, which means a faster recovery for the patient without sacrificing dramatic, long-lasting results.

Why Should You Consider a Mini Facelift?

A mini facelift is typically recommended for early signs of aging, contrary to what a standard facelift technique addresses. Specific concerns addressed with this procedure include:

  • Excess facial skin around the nose, mouth and in front of the ear
  • Mild to moderate sagging along the jawline
  • A mini facelift may be performed alone a la carte or with other procedures, such as eyelid surgery or a brow lift, to enhance results

How does a mini facelift procedure work?

A mini facelift may be performed under IV sedation or local anesthesia with oral sedation in the clinic. The procedure involves a smaller incision, that usually starts around the temple and extends around the ear. Incisions are carefully placed in the hairline and natural folds of the skin to minimize visible scarring after the procedure.

How long does it take?

Mini facelifts may only take an hour or two to complete. After a short time in recovery, patients are able to return home the same day as their surgery. It is important to have someone with you during the first 24 hours or so after surgery, to ensure you have ample opportunity to remain quiet and rest immediately following your procedure.

What is recovery like?

Swelling and discomfort after surgery is normal and usually subsides within a few days. Patients can manage discomfort with oral pain medication. Recovery from a mini facelift tends to be shorter than recovery from the standard facelift. Most patients are back to work and regular activities can resume within a week.

What can I expect from my mini facelift results?

Results from a mini facelift are seen right away and continue to improve over the following weeks as the treated areas heal. Most patients enjoy dramatic results that can last a few years although results are not typically as long-lasting as a standard facelift. Proper skin care and patient lifestyle can extend the results further.
