What is a facelift?

A facelift or rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure that can truly create a more youthful appearance. The procedure can be customized to the unique concerns of each patient. The facelift typically involves restoring the underlying tissue to its original, youthful form while removing excess skin, and smoothing remaining skin over the freshly treated area. Facelifts have evolved considerably in recent years, offering beautiful and natural results that can last for years to come.

A facelift is often recommended for the following concerns:

  • Skin sagging in the neck, lower and mid-face regions
  • Deep facial creases extending from the nose and along the nasolabial crease
  • Lost or displaced facial fat
  • Loss of skin elasticity, leading to jowls along the jawline (Marionette lines)
  • Facelifts are often performed in combination with other surgical procedures, such as eyelid surgery, brow lift, or neck lift

*Individual results may vary.

How does a facelift procedure work?

Dr. Schneider typically performs facelifts under intravenous sedation in his clinic or if patient requests to be put under general anesthesia at an alternate surgery center. Patients go home the same day as the procedure and are seen the following day in the clinic to ensure appropriate healing. Incisions for a standard facelift extend from the temples and around the ears, to follow the hairline along the natural crease of the face. Dr. Schneider follows the natural crease as much as possible to minimize visible scarring. A facelift will usually take a number of hours to complete, depending on the extent and type of lift performed. Patients are then moved to a recovery area so that medical staff can ensure they respond well to the anesthesia and surgery. Once you are allowed to go home, you’ll need to have someone with you for the first 24-48 hours to ensure no complications arise from surgery.

What is recovery like?

During the early days after your procedure, you will be given oral pain medications to keep you comfortable. You will likely be advised to rest with your head in an elevated position to minimize swelling and promote healing to the face. Compression dressings may also be used to reduce swelling and encourage healthy blood flow. Most patients are ready to return to work and other activities approximately two weeks after surgery. However, it is important to avoid sun exposure for many months, to ensure scars heal well. Strenuous activity and exercise will also be restricted for a number of weeks to prevent complications and promote normal healing after your procedure.

What can I expect from my facelift results?

Facelift results may take some time to see the full effect. The body needs to heal properly before positive results can be fully evident. Your skin will look smoother and more youthful, with fewer facial creases. Once your full results are visible, they are likely to last many years. Dr. Schneider is experienced in all types of facelift procedures and works with each patient to ensure procedures meet their expectations.
