Jessica’s Journey with Clean Start Weight Loss, Part 6

Note: this is part 5 of an ongoing guest blog series by Jessica Joyce, documenting her preparations on the road to the 2019 Mrs. MN America Pageant. Read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5.

Hi! I’m back to talk about clean eating, fitness, and pageant preparations. This Saturday I will be taking the stage to compete for the title of Mrs. Minnesota America and am in final push mode!

The past few months have been transformative. I have gained knowledge and acquired skills that have helped me become the best version of myself. I have been able to tap into my passion for nutrition and fitness and have loved documenting my journey!

Clean Start and Fitness

The past month with Clean Start I have been following a carb cycle of two low carb days, one high carb day, repeat. I have been able to maintain my weight and body fat goals this way. I find it easy to adjust my macros when needed by continuing to keep a detailed food journal. My calorie intake has been between 2200-2500 calories. I find my weight consistently correlates to my body fat percentage which is why I am a firm believer in using the scale for daily progress checks. This week I will tighten up my calories and carbs in order to bring my best swim suit body to the stage!

Being consistent with my workouts has played a vital role in my maintenance phase. Lifting weights elevates my metabolism and gives me the toned look I am shooting for. My go to cardio is still the stepper. I must spend a lot of time stepping because I have been nicknamed “Stepper Girl”.  While this competition requires more than looking good in a swimsuit; I believe a fit body represents discipline, vitality, and health!

Professional Skin Care

Let’s talk skin care now! I am always on the lookout for the best skin care products and have tried many over the years. Botox has been amazing for preventive care and reducing fine lines on my forehead! I have certainly enjoyed waking up with a fresh, well rested face. The correct daily skin care regimen is important to achieve optimal skin health and is also a great way to maintain and enhance the effects of my Botox. The past month I have been using PCA Skin CareTM, carried at Riverview Facial Plastic Surgery. PCA Skin CareTM products have a greater amount of active ingredients than over the counter skin care which helps to improve facial skin tone and texture. These active ingredients stimulate your body’s natural collagen production creating younger looking skin. I have enjoyed using PCA Skin CareTM. I am noticing a smoother look and feel to my skin! I will keep up with this skin care regimen and look forward to trying out different PCA products!

I have had fun learning more about the exciting enhancements offered at Riverview Facial Plastic Surgery! Thank you, Dr. Schneider and Amy, for supporting me through this journey. Clean Start progress checks have helped me immensely and held me accountable. I feel confident, calm, and prepared as I go into my pageant weekend. I would highly recommend Dr. Schneider and his team at Riverview to help you reach any beauty or health goal!

I will be back to let you know how it goes this weekend! Wish me luck!!

How to Find a New Doctor if you’re Unsatisfied with your Care

Not all doctors are created equal. Every physician has his or her own personality and approach to treatment, and finding the right fit is essential to a good doctor-patient relationship. But what if you find that you and your physician are incompatible? In this article we will talk about what to do if you are unsatisfied with your current physician.

When Doctors and Patients Butt Heads

There are several reasons why a patient may not get along with a physician. Here are a few possible scenarios:

  • The patient disagrees with the physician on a treatment recommendation.
  • The doctor “pushes” a treatment on the patient that they don’t want.
  • The doctor’s personality does not mesh well with the patient’s.

These are just a few of the many reasons why a doctor and patient may not get along. Sometimes these issues can be resolved through frank communication. But other times, there is nothing to be done but move on.

How to Find a New Provider

If you find yourself at an impasse and simply cannot continue visiting your current physician, it’s time to make a change. Simply explain the situation to your physician and tell them that you will be seeing another doctor. Once that’s taken care of, the next step is finding a new physician that will be a good fit for you. Take to the web and do some research on doctors in your area. See how other patients rate them. You can also ask your friends and family members to see if they have anyone they could recommend. Once you find a doctor, make an appointment with them and explain your situation so that you can avoid repeating history.

Kristi’s Story – The Clean Start Medical Weight Loss Program in Action!

Note: the following is a guest article by Riverview patient, Kristi Gavin about her experience with the Clean Start Medical Weight Loss Program.

The Clean Start Medical Weight Loss program at Riverview Facial Plastic & Total Body Aesthetic is the best way to lose weight and KEEP it off.

I have tried several other weight loss programs in the past that had bars and shakes that the “counselors” heavily pushed during and after those programs. None of them ever taught me how to have continued success with eating REAL food and really educating me on the “bad habits” that can prevent me living a healthy lifestyle.

25 Pounds in 6 Weeks

Clean Start is a quick weight loss program, I lost just over 25 pounds in 6 weeks. It was amazing to see the weight drop off so rapidly. I ate REAL food the whole time – no shakes, bars or pre-made meals. The calorie restriction was balanced with the HCG injections and after the 6 weeks was over the maintenance is really SIMPLE.

I have always been someone who works out regularly and in my 20’s and 30’s this kept me in shape and I was able to eat what I wanted. But now that I’m in my 40’s working out alone doesn’t give me the same benefits. Since completing the Clean Start program I’m seeing my body changing in the ways I have always wanted it to, this weight loss program re-starts your metabolism so that your body is responds to diet and exercise the way it’s meant to. I feel stronger and have energy that I didn’t have before.

3 Benefits of a Corporate Wellness Program

Employers are becoming more and more conscious of the importance of the health and wellness of their employees. Keep Your Team Healthy & Happy

Our corporate wellness program utilizes the Clean Start weight loss plan to help your employees eliminate unwanted fat deposits. The program works to reduce cravings, restart your metabolism, decrease your appetite, and create a new normal weight.

Work with a Medical Professional

The program involves the implementation of a strict whole foods diet, in tandem with hCG injections to control urges and reset the metabolism.

Jessica’s Journey with Clean Start Weight Loss, Part 5

Note: this is part 5 of an ongoing guest blog series by Jessica Joyce, documenting her preparations on the road to the 2019 Mrs. MN America Pageant. Read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.

Hi! I’m here to give an update on Clean Start and my pageant preparations. And since the weather is finally heating up (YAY!) and beach time is right around the corner now is a great time to talk about popular ways to help you reduce stubborn body fat!

The past two weeks I have been in the maintenance phase of Clean Start. This phase started off more challenging than being in an extremely rigid eating pattern. I introduced more carbs into my diet and noticed it took about two weeks to find the right balance of macros (proteins, fats and carbs) to maintain my current body fat percentage and weight. I also had a couple of meals where I went off of clean eating. When not eating clean I noticed my skin breaking out. I also experienced an increase in sinus issues and had less energy. This is a great reminder of why it is so important to eliminate sugar from my diet. My body feels better and I am in the right mindset when eating clean. I have six weeks left before taking the stage to compete for the title of Mrs. Minnesota America and I need to be focused and in the game!

My focus for the next six weeks is to tighten up my diet again and start back up with a Clean Start carb cycle. I will eat the foods listed in my first blog and go back to high, low and no carb days. I am also excited to get outside for high intensity workouts! My favorite outdoor workout is running the steep staircase and hills in Stillwater! This creates the ultimate burn!

I have great results by eating clean and getting regular exercise. If you eat clean, exercise regularly and still struggle with stubborn fat in certain areas there are a couple non-invasive procedures that may be great options for you.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting, also called cryolipolysis, is a non-invasive FDA approved medical procedure that freezes and kills fat. CoolSculpting is not for weight loss. It is a treatment to reduce fat once a patient is at or close to their ideal body weight. What is great about this treatment is that it is customized to each patient’s body since we all store fat in different areas. Commonly treated areas include: under the chin/below the jaw line, abdomen, flanks, outer thighs, inner thighs, bra fat, upper arm and banana roll (that lovely area under the glutes).

Allergan notes patients can expect up to a 20-25 percent reduction in fat after each CoolSculpting treatment. It takes about 30-45 days on average to see results, although, for some it may take up to 90 days to see the full effect.

Each treatment takes 30-60 minutes to complete, depending on the area being treated. It is possible for a patient to have multiple areas treated at once. A patient will typically need 4 treatments in each area to see desired results. Since CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure there is no down time and a patient can typically return to their normal activities immediately following treatment.

Exilis

Exilis is another procedure offered at Riverview Facial Plastic Surgery. Exilis is a non-invasive fat loss and skin tightening treatment that can be used in combination with CoolSculpting. Exilis is also a good adjunct therapy after some facial surgeries and can be used to treat mild fine lines and wrinkles. For optimal results 4-6 sessions are generally needed.

CoolSculpting and Exilis are great options to look and feel amazing-  whether that is feeling more confident for a day at the beach or wanting to fit into your favorite skinny jeans for a night on the town!

Dr. Schneider is currently running a great springtime special. Save $200 on each CoolSculpting treatment when you buy 4 or more!Call Riverview Facial Plastic Surgery to schedule a complementary consultation and learn how you can best accomplish your body contouring goals!

What to Expect from CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a great way to get rid of unwanted body fat in problem areas that exercise and diet can’t address. But before beginning any sort of cosmetic treatment, it’s important to manage your expectations and understand what the procedure you’re having is capable of. In this article, we are going to talk about what to expect from a CoolSculpting session.

Before Your Appointment

Before your CoolSculpting appointment, the first thing you should do is consult with a CoolSculpting specialist about your options. Not everyone is a good candidate for CoolSculpting so it’s important to determine the best treatment options for your situation. This is also a good time for you to talk with your doctor about what type of results you can expect from the procedure.

During Your Appointment

Depending on the patient and the specific area being treated, CoolSculpting sessions can take anywhere from 30-60 minutes on average per area. It is often possible to have multiple areas treated in one session. The procedure itself is completely painless and requires no anesthetic whatsoever.

After Your Appointment

Patients typically begin to see results in 1-3 months following their procedure. It’s important for patients to remember that CoolSculpting is not a weight loss method that can replace diet and exercise. It is a supplemental treatment that can eliminate stubborn fat from problem areas that diet and exercise aren’t able to handle.

Jessica’s Journey with Clean Start Weight Loss, Part 4

Note: this is part 4 of an ongoing guest blog series by Jessica Joyce, documenting her preparations on the road to the 2019 Mrs. MN America Pageant. Read Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.

Hi! I’m back for more Clean Start and weight loss talk! I have learned so much throughout the past six weeks and have regained skills to live my healthiest life. By manipulating carbohydrate and caloric intake, I have now entered into a state of ketosis.  I no longer crave sugar and my body performs at an optimal level using protein as its fuel source. I have better mental focus and clarity, improved sleep and experience fewer headaches! I find my energy levels are consistent throughout the day, never hitting that mid-afternoon wall. What I have also enjoyed throughout this process is having so much endurance in my weight training and cardio workouts! As my body fat and weight have decreased, I have been able to maintain my strength and feel energized while exercising. A total win!

Clean Start Maintenance Phase

I have successfully hit my target body fat and weight goals! Over the course of 6 weeks I have reduced my body fat by 5 percent and created a new baseline weight by resetting my metabolism. I am now in the maintenance phase of Clean Start! I am excited to implement what I have learned in the past six weeks into this phase of my diet. Sometimes transitioning from a rigid diet to a lifestyle diet can be difficult. Listed below are tips and strategies I have found most effective throughout my weight loss journey and that I will continue to follow to keep my current state.

Food journal

Keeping track of all nutrition consumed is a must. Journaling your food intake can show patterns to eating and help identify where areas of improvement need to be made. Journaling emotions along with nutrition is also helpful to show any correlation between nutrition and emotional state.

Meal Prep

Prepare meals for 3-4 days and store in Tupperware containers with calories and macros (fat, protein, carbs) labeled.  This takes out the guess work and will save time and money.

Daily Weight Check

Weighing yourself daily is an effective weight loss tool. This can create self-awareness and lead to better weight control behaviors. By monitoring body weight closely, modifications to diet can be made accordingly.

Consume Caffeine

Iced coffee is my favorite treat. A little jolt of caffeine can help push through a craving and is great before a workout. Caffeine may also help boost your metabolic rate and burn more fat.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water (around 60-70 oz. per day) can help with satiety and prevent dehydration.

Sleep 7-8 Hours

The body repairs, both physically and mentally, when at rest. Getting enough rest will also keep your cortisol levels in check which helps to regulate metabolism.

Dietary Supplements

A health/nutrition specialist can determine what supplements your body needs. I take Magnesium L-Threonate, Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, CLA, Omega 3 Fish Oil and Collagen Protein Hydrolysate. I take Magnesium L-Threonate because it is the only magnesium that passes through the blood brain barrier. This helps to regulate anxious tendencies and balance cortisol.

Fasted Cardio

Perform cardiovascular exercise in a fasted state 1 or 2 times per week. Fasted cardio is a controversial issue in the fitness industry. I have always performed fasted cardio when prepping for fitness competitions and have seen great results. I will continue to do this to give me an edge.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Incorporating HIIT into your workout routine has many benefits. They include: A boost in metabolism, higher calorie burn, higher EPOC (Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption), preserves muscle while burning more fat and can be performed anywhere without equipment.

Committed Mind Set

Being committed to your maintenance phase is just as important as during a weight loss phase! Be passionate about your health and continue on with the same great habits you worked so hard to form!

I am amazed at how fast my body adapted with The Clean Start Weight Loss Program and how quickly I reached my target goal! This is the fastest my body has ever leaned up. I am committed to stay on track to maintain my current fitness level. I want to make sure to bring my best, both mentally and physically, to the stage when I compete for Mrs. Minnesota America this June! I will be back to give updates on my maintenance phase and pageant preparation fun!

6 FAQs About Botox

Here are a few commonly asked questions about Botox answered by Riverview Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Schneider!

Who is a good candidate for Botox?

Nearly everyone is a candidate for Botox as long as there is no history of allergy to onabotulinum or current pregnancy.

When is the best time to start getting Botox?

The ideal time to start Botox would be before lines emerge on the face in areas I commonly treat which include around the eyes, between the eyebrows and the mid forehead.

Why is preventive Botox important?

Preventive medicine is always easier and better than therapeutic medicine as we can now prevent the problem, mainly wrinkles on the face at rest.  The goal is not a “frozen” look, but rather a more relaxed and refreshed appearance.

When will you see the results of Botox?

Most patient see the results within 5-7 days.  Unlike facial fillers which take effect immediately, Botox has to be absorbed at the cellular level before it works.

How long does Botox last?

Botox generally works for 3-4 months. Some patients get injections on this schedule whereas some prefer injections 1-2 times a year.

How many units will I need and where are the most common places to have Botox injected?

It depends on your area of concern and budget.  If it is only the Crow’s feet at the corners of the eye that bother you it may only be 9-15 units a side whereas if it is the mid forehead lines that bother you that may only need 12-15 units.  The area between the eyes, also called the vertical 11’s that develop from expressions of anger and frustration, are usually treated with 20-25 units. Patients need to remember that Botox and facial fillers like Juvederm or Restylane work to complement one another when used to treat the vertical 11 area.

Common Plastic Surgery Procedures by Patient Age

Plastic surgery can benefit patients of all backgrounds and of most ages. But the types of procedures patients get is highly dependent on their age. In this article, we are going to talk about some common plastic surgery procedures by age range.

Patients in their Teens (13 – 19)

Teenagers are typically not good candidates for plastic surgery procedures as their bodies are still changing while they go through puberty. However, one notable exception is the rhinoplasty procedure. Rhinoplasty is the most common plastic surgery procedure in patients aged 13-19. This is because the nose is already fully formed at this age and won’t change as a result of puberty.

Patients in their 20s-30s

While many patients still are not seeing any significant signs of aging in their 20s-30s, the body typically begins to slow down – making it harder to keep weight off. This makes CoolSculpting and other non-invasive techniques a popular choice for patients this age.

Patients in their 40s-50s

This is the age at which many patients begin to see noticeable signs of aging that can decrease self-confidence. Blepharoplasty is the most common procedure among patients in their 40s-50s. This procedure lifts the eyelids and prevents the patient from appearing tired or worn out.

Patients Over 55

At this age, the body has naturally worn down significantly due to natural wear-and-tear. Patients often have deep facial wrinkles, sagging and drooping, and jowls. As a result, a full facelift is one of the most common procedures among patients of this age.
